I bought this guitar a few years back from Matt's widow in Miami. What a history lesson she gave me on their life together. The guitar is back in Oklahoma. Can meet in OKC for delivery. Matt “Guitar” Murphy was an amazing blues legend known for sharing the studio and stage with the likes of Memphis Slim, Koko Taylor, Sonny Boy Williamson, Buddy Guy, Etta James, Otis Rush and Willie Dixon. Some of his most memorable performances happened in 1963 on the American and Folk Blues Festival tour of Europe with his "Matt's Guitar Boogie". Freddie King is said to have admitted that he based his well known blues hit “Hide Away" on Murphy's playing during this performance...Jimmy Page has also claimed him as one of his biggest influences when putting Led Zeppelin together in his autobiography... In the 1970s, Murphy did considerable work with harmonica player James Cotton, recording over six albums. Dan Akroyd and John Belushi attended one of their performances and subsequently asked Murphy to join The Blues Brothers Band. Murphy appeared in the films The Blues Brothers ( 1980 ) and Blues Brothers 2000 ( 1998 ), playing the husband of Aretha Franklin. He performed with the Blues Brothers Band until the early 2000s. Matt reached out to world renowned luthier Jim Hamilton in 1996 to commission this special guitar which was used on many live performances and recordings until his death in 2018. There is natural player vibe & wear evident all over the instrument from its many gigs on the road with Matt. Inside the back cavity, it is noted as being "Custom Built for Matt Murphy by James Hamilton - January 1996". This guitar comes complete with its hardshell case, trem bar, an old plane ticket stub of Matt's from the road, some of Matt's old strings & picks and touring flyer. Just an amazing package for any guitar collection or real blues fan.
