1979 Fender Stratocaster

Antigua finish

is a distinctive vintage guitar, known for its unique "burst" aesthetic that features a black edge fading to a mustard yellow center on both the body and the matching pickguard. It was part of a reintroduction of the finish in 1977, having first appeared on Fender's Coronado semi-hollow body guitars in the late 1960s.

  • Finish Details: The Antigua finish is a thick skin polyester application, which is known for being durable but also prone to finish checking (cracking) and chipping over time, contributing to a natural relic look. The finish covers both the solid body and the 4-ply pickguard, creating a unique "burst within a burst" visual effect.

  • Body: The solid body is typically made of ash or sometimes alder. The body can be either a standard tremolo bridge style or a hardtail (strings-through-body) bridge configuration.

  • Neck and Fingerboard: It features a maple neck with a "C" or "U"-shaped profile and a large headstock, typical of the CBS era Fenders. The fingerboard is also often maple, with black dot inlays, a 7.25" radius, and 21 frets. It utilizes a 3-bolt neck plate with a Micro-Tilt™ adjustment and a bullet-style truss rod.

  • Hardware and Electronics:

    • Pickups: The guitar comes with three original gray-bottom single-coil pickups (SSS configuration).

    • Controls: Standard controls include a master volume, two tone knobs (one for neck/middle, one for bridge pickup), and a 5-way pickup selector switch.

    • Hardware: The hardware is typically chrome, including vintage "F" stamped tuners.
